World Music, Steel Drums and More!
Jim Knutson, Onalaska, WI
knuja@onalaska.k12.wi.us
Whether you are a music teacher or a
classroom teacher using Responsive
Classroom who wants to enhance your
Morning Meetings, this workshop will
enrich your classroom practice!
World music has been filtering into
both the popular music market and
the general music classroom over the
past few years. By making use of
this trend, music educators, and
classroom teachers, have an
opportunity to serve both general
and unique populations with exciting
alternative instrumental programs.
Properly presented, these hands-on
offerings can help students
experience the joy of music making
as they come to appreciate other
cultures. Come HAVE FUN while
learning some best practices that
will excite your students and help
them develop their memory and
concentration skills!
Workshop participants will not only
experience a wide variety of
Afro-Cuban percussion instruments,
such as congas, bongos, and
timbales, they will learn how to
create culturally authentic-sounding
ensembles. Participants will even
acquire tips for finding funds to
purchase instruments and for
building school and community
support for innovative music
programs. Previous participants left
this workshop brimming with ideas
how drum circles can enhance
community building and work with
special needs students.
