Supervision of Student Teachers
Joyce Shanks, UW-LaCrosse, LaCrosse,
WI
shanks.joyc@uwlax.edu
The
goal of this workshop is to prepare
participants to work as
mentors/facilitators with student
teachers and/or beginning teachers.
We will examine varying approaches
to supervision. We will consider the
strengths, weaknesses, and uses of
these models of supervision. We will
practice using the models through
microteaching and the supervision of
lessons in class. We will consider
the licensure requirements for work
with teachers under PI 34. We will
study the ten Wisconsin Educator
Standards and how they apply to work
with both student teachers and
beginning teachers.
Participants will learn the basic
principles of three models of
supervision and apply principles of
supervision in their work with
teachers (student teachers,
beginning teachers, or experienced
teachers.) The participants will
also be able to use the Wisconsin
Teacher Standards to help novice
teachers learn about their teaching
practice.
Successful completion of the
workshop will allow teachers to
supervise and mentor student
teachers and beginning teachers as
required by PI 34.
