GET 'INTO THE BOOK' WITH READING
COMPREHENSION STRATEGIES
Cathy Burge, Holmen School District
-
catnikchel@charter.net
Peggy Garties, WECB -
Pgarties@ecb.state.wi.us
In this workshop you'll learn
exciting ways to effectively teach
eight learning strategies that
improve a young reader's
comprehension: using prior
knowledge, making connections,
questioning, visualizing, inferring,
summarizing, evaluating and
synthesizing. We'll view
Into the Book, the
elementary reading comprehension
video series from ECB and WI Public
Television, and talk about ways to
use it in your classroom.
We'll also watch and discuss the
professional development series
Behind the Lesson, to see
how other Wisconsin teachers are
teaching these strategies. And
we'll spend lots of time exploring
the resources of the Into the
Book website.
You'll try out the interactive
student activities so you'll be
ready to use them with your
students, and we'll explore the
lesson plans, teaching tips and
downloads available in the teacher
area. Presenters will lead
activities and discussion on how to
use all of these FREE
resources to enhance your teaching
of reading comprehension strategies.
