The course will focus on understanding reading and writing as cognitive processes and how teachers' observations and assessments are the beginning point for instruction.  Observing children's literacy behavior (implications of strategic activities) will help teachers develop a personal theory of the cognitive processes children are developing.    Learning appropriate instructional techniques to guide the learning will help teachers reflect on their own instructional practices and how their classrooms are designed to encourage and instruct the developing reader and writer.

Teachers will identify strategies to facilitate development in phonological awareness, word recognition, and/or comprehension of narratives, based on what the individual child currently knows.
