GROCERY STORE BOTANY
Tim Gerber, UW-La Crosse Biology
Department
gerber.dani@uwlax.edu
When you eat an apple or potato,
just exactly what plant tissues are
you eating anyway? Did you
know when you eat a tomato; you
consume embryos, placental tissue,
and ovaries? This hands-on
workshop focuses on commonly eaten
vegetables, spices, fruits, etc. and
the plant parts from which they
develop. Through simple
dissection techniques, a hand lens
and some close observation, students
will enjoy learning about fruit,
flower, and organ (i.e. plant)
structure. Workshop
participants will have the
opportunity to taste and dissect a
variety of fruits and vegetables,
which can be easily obtained form
the grocery store or garden.
Our dissections will provide a focus
for discussing how plant structure
can bring excitement to teaching the
elementary/middle level life science
content standards related to these
hands-on activities.
