CHALLENGING GIFTED STUDENTS IN
THE REGULAR CLASSROOM (A SURVIVOR'S
GUIDE)
Jackie Drummer, South Milwaukee
drummer.jackie@sdsm.k12.wi.us
Gifted students spend the majority
of their learning time in the
regular classroom. Though they
are often a joy to work with, they
provide additional challenges in
planning content, process, and
products, since they may already
know 50-80% of your curriculum
before they enter your classroom.
This workshop will help you
understand identification methods
and programming options and provide
you with many strategies to meet the
needs of these children in your
regular classroom. It will
also help expand your complete
teacher toolkit and is based on Best
Practice. Come prepared to
laugh, to create, to think and to
share.
Objectives:
 |
Understand characteristics
of gifted children |
 |
Understand various
programming options based on
research, state law, Best
Practices, and the Pyramid
Model |
 |
Understand "twice
exceptional" students and
their needs |
 |
Explore, practice, and
refine the seven basic
strategies of
differentiation -
compacting, flexible
grouping, tiered
assignments, learning
centers, independent
contracts and questioning |
 |
Explore and use some of the
best materials that can b
bought and created to extend
student learning in all
content areas |
This workshop will be guided by the
Gifted Program Standards, a
collaboration of the National
Council for Accreditation in Teacher
Education (NCATE), the council for
Exceptional Children (CEC), and the
National Association for Gifted
Children (NAGC).
