LET'S SOLVE A MYSTERY: CHEMISTRY FOR
KIDS
INSTRUCTOR(S):
Marilyn Duerst,
UW-River Falls
GRADE LEVEL: 3-7
"Let's solve a mystery!" is an
enticing opening line for any
engaging science lesson.
Teachers will try out a multitude of
chemistry -related activities for
upper elementary/lower middle school
children that will enhance most
science curricula, including "liquid
thievery", "the fruit juice
mystery", "the case of the missing
stapler" and "mystery metals".
Teachers will create lesson plans
detailing how at least ten of the
activities can be adapted in their
own classrooms at the appropriate
levels. Teachers will receive
a copy of the children's book,
The Crimecracker Kids and
Bake-Shop Break-In, as well as
the accompanying Teachers' Guide,
written by the instructor, and learn
how to use this book and its
experiments in a five-to-seven day
mini-unit.
