We all want our
students to become thoughtful,
strategic, proficient readers.
Immersing them in cultures of
thinking and understanding is an
important first step. Debbie will
speak to the importance of creating
classroom environments that reflect
what we believe about teaching and
learning, comprehension strategy
instruction, merging a Readers’
Workshop format and the gradual
release of responsibility
instructional model, and lesson
design. Participants will have
opportunities throughout each day
for conversation and collaboration.
Debbie taught and
learned from children in the Denver
Public Schools for 30 years. She is
the author of the new book
Teaching with Intention: Defining
Beliefs, Aligning Practice, and
Taking Action, Reading with Meaning,
and the video series Happy
Reading and The Joy of Conferring.
Debbie presents workshops and works
extensively with schools and
districts on long-range planning and
development of literacy programs.
She worked for many years with the
Denver-based Public Education and
Business Coalition (PEBC), a
