UNDERSTANDING AUTISM SPECTRUM
DISORDER FOR EFFECTIVE EDUCATIONAL
PROGRAMMING: Practical Strategies
for Instruction & Behavior
Management
INSTRUCTOR(S):
Susan Stokes,
Autism Consultant, CESA #6
GRADE LEVEL: PK-12
CREDIT: 1
(Monday-Wednesday only.
Registration Cost = $200)
This workshop-based course will
provide participants with the
necessary foundation or knowledge
base for being able to effectively
program for learners with autism
spectrum disorder (ASD).
Participants will develop a thorough
understanding of the unique
processing and learning styles of
people with ASD. This training will
present the basis for identifying
instructional areas of need for
students with ASD (e.g., IEP
development; Family/County Support
service plan development), as well
as behavioral challenges in relation
to the features and characteristics
of autism spectrum disorder.
Participants will learn how to
reframe their thinking in addressing
challenging behaviors often
exhibited by a person with ASD by
understanding the behavior as a
feature or characteristic of the
person's neurobiological
disability. This skill development
will provide participants with the
foundation for developing effective
behavior modification programming
for learners with autism spectrum
disorder.
Numerous "proven to work"
instructional strategies will be
demonstrated, to address the unique
learning needs of students with
ASD. Many "ready-to-make" visual
support strategies designed to teach
skills and increase independent
functioning for immediate use
with students with ASD will be
shared throughout this training .
Strategies to engineer the physical
environment to provide the visual
structure needed y learners with ASD
to increase their comprehension and
understanding will be demonstrated.
