INTEGRATING READING STRATEGIES
ACROSS THE CURRICULUM
~ (Emphasis on Non-Fiction Text)
INSTRUCTOR(S):
Mary Gotinger & Kerry Duersteler,
West Allis/West
Milwaukee School District
GRADE LEVEL: 3-12
CREDIT: 2 or 3
This class is designed to show
teachers (regular education, special
education, and English as a second
language) how they can integrate
interactive reading strategies that
help students organize information
and make meaningful connections to
new learning. Educators will
learn ways in which text structure
affects comprehension and acquire
strategies for helping students
increase their learning of content.
Differentiation for special
education and ESL students will be
incorporated. There will be
opportunities for participants to
work with colleagues in
collaborative groups to apply
instructional strategies using
non-fiction student materials.
Participants will leave with a
collection of practical and easy to
apply research-based strategies to
increase the reading achievement of
all students across the curriculum.
