EARLY
LITERACY ACQUISITION

This course will focus on
understanding reading and writing as
cognitive processes and how
teachers' observations and
assessments are the beginning point
for instruction. Observing
children's literacy behaviors
(implications of strategic
activities) will help teachers
develop a personal theory of the
cognitive processes children are
developing. Learning
appropriate instructional techniques
to guide learning will help teachers
reflect on their own instructional
practices and how their classrooms
are designed to encourage and
instruct the developing reader and
writer. Teachers will explore
the concept that instruction is
based on what the individual child
currently knows.
