BEST PRACTICE IN MIDDLE AND SECONDARY MATHEMATICS

INSTRUCTOR(S): Cynthia Cuellar, Milwaukee Public School District
GRADE LEVEL: 6-12
CREDIT: 2 or 3
 

This course is designed to provide participants with the opportunity to plan for the implementation of a standards-based, student-centered math curriculum.  Aspects of lesson planning, classroom management and student assessment will be considered.

 By the end of the course, participants will be able to:

Create learning experiences that make understanding of mathematics and inquiry in mathematics meaningful
to a variety of students with a wide range of ability and interest.

Create learning experiences that meet the mathematics standards for their districts.

bullet

Create sample lesson plans for at least two of the units in the standards-based program chosen.

bullet

Explain the objective of the lesson, how it was approached in a traditional program, and how the lesson will be
handled differently in the standards-based program.

bullet

Present information relating to change that will improve student learning and change teacher instruction.

bullet

Develop a method for sharing their creative thoughts with others in the class and with other teachers in their
building and/or district.  Blackboard, as well as other options, will be explored.
