TEACHING THE 6 + 1 TRAITS OF WRITING FOR GRADES K-5

INSTRUCTOR(S): Lila Binder & Michele Moore, Waukesha School District
GRADE LEVEL: K-5
CREDIT: 2 or 3

The Six-Trait Analytical Writing Framework is a model for assessment and instruction.  The framework not only defines the criteria of quality writing, but also provides teachers, students, and parents with a common language for discussing and improving writing.  The Six-Trait Framework is not a curriculum, but rather a way of linking effective writing assessment with revision and editing.

Participants will:

bullet

Review the development stages of writing;

bullet

Apply the Six-Trait Analytical Scoring Guide;

bullet

Practice scoring student writing;

bullet

Explore connections between literature and the language of writing;

bullet

Learn strategies for teaching the traits to students.

Writing instruction focuses on six characteristics of effective writing: ideas, organization, voice, word choice, sentence fluency and conventions.
