TEACHING THE 6 + 1 TRAITS OF WRITING
FOR GRADES 6-12
INSTRUCTOR(S):
Mark Bingen & Megan Panek,
Waukesha School District
GRADE LEVEL: 6-12
CREDIT: 2 or 3
The Six-Trait Analytical Writing
Framework is a model for assessment
and instruction. The framework
not only defines the criteria of
quality writing, but also provides
teachers, students, and parents with
a common language for discussing and
improving writing. The
Six-Trait Framework is not a
curriculum, but rather a way of
linking effective writing assessment
with revision and editing.
Participants will:
 |
Review the development
stages of writing;
|
 |
Apply the Six-Trait
Analytical Scoring Guide;
|
 |
Practice scoring student
writing;
|
 |
Explore connections between
literature and the language
of writing;
|
 |
Learn strategies for
teaching the traits to
students.
|
Writing instruction focuses on six
characteristics of effective
writing: ideas, organization, voice,
word choice, sentence fluency and
conventions.
