WORDS THEIR WAY INTEGRATED INTO A
BALANCED LITERACY MODEL
INSTRUCTOR(S): Kim Gullickson &
Leslie Connors & Becky Pichler/West
Allis/West Milwaukee School District
GRADE LEVEL:K-5
CREDIT: 1 (This workshop will meet
on Thursday & Friday only)
(Registration cost = $125.00)
Instructing students at their
developmental spelling level can
increase their word identification
skills and comprehension levels.
Based on a successful action
research project that evaluated the
affect of this program on struggling
readers, participants will learn how
they can increase spelling and
reading abilities of their students.
The core of the program comes from
the book Words Their Way
(Bear, Invernizze, Templeton, and
Johnston, 2004). It is a
hands-on word study program in
phonics, vocabulary and spelling
instruction for kindergarten to 5th
grade students. This program
focuses on consistencies within the
written language that will increase
spelling, decoding and vocabulary.
This workshop will provide
participants with successful
research, assessment procedures,
examples of actual lessons using
word sorts, word study notebooks and
games. At the completion of
this course, participants will have
the knowledge and materials needed
to successfully incorporate word
study or Words Their Way into
their balanced literacy program.
