PROACT®: PROFESSIONAL ASSAULT CRISIS TRAINING

INSTRUCTOR: Kelley Stendler, West Allis/West Milwaukee School District
GRADE LEVEL: PK-12
CREDIT:  2 or 3

ProACT (Professional Assault Crisis Training) was designed to minimize the risks associated with the emergency response to assaultive behavior.  The principles used in Professional Assault Crisis Training have been in continuous development since 1968.  These principles are research based and have proven effective for over 30 years.  The training reflects ProACT's long-standing emphasis on AVOIDANCE IN THE USE OF RESTRAINT, with a preference for DEESCALATING BEHAVIOR AND INTERVENING before restraint is required.

ProACT is based on principles rather than techniques.  These principles include:

  • Professionalism

  • Preparation

  • Problem-solving

  • Teamwork

  • Accurate identification

  • Balanced crisis communication

Even evasion and physical interventions are not based on techniques, but rather a well-structured set of principles.

In order to reinforce teamwork it is preferable to have at least 2 people from a building participate in the training.  A special education teacher along with a regular education teacher would be a great start for a ProAct team!!
