CLASSROOM STRATEGIES FOR LEARNING IN ACADEMIC SUBJECTS

INSTRUCTOR(S): Doug Buehl, Adolescent Literacy Consultant
GRADE LEVEL: 6-12
CREDIT: 1 (This workshop will meet on Monday & Tuesday only) (Registration cost = $200.00)

Our students are challenged by increasingly more sophisticated reading demands as they progress through the middle and high school curriculum.  In particular, students must become more accomplished learners within a variety of academic disciplines - they are expected to read, write, and think, for example, like historians, scientists and mathematicians.  Students may develop their capacity as readers in some academic disciplines, such as literary fiction, but many remain stalled as readers in others, such as science or social studies.  Teachers participating in this two-day workshop will be introduced to specific comprehension strategies identified by research that help students unlock the academic discourse essential to learning in their content subjects.  Instructional applications of strategies that mentor all students as they develop their proficiencies as readers and learners will be modeled with texts from a range of academic disciplines.
