ASSISTIVE TECHNOLOGY AT WORK IN THE
CLASSROOM
INSTRUCTOR(S): Nicole Gosser & Lori
Marso, West Allis/West Milwaukee
School District
GRADE LEVEL: PK-12
CREDIT: 1, 2 or 3
How can you help students who are
struggling in your classroom?
This class will help both regular
and special education teachers
explore the field of assistive
technology and identify ways to help
struggling students increase
achievement levels. Different
areas of assistive technology will
be examined such as writing,
communication, reading, studying and
math. Factors contribution to
the successful use of various
devices and tools will be identified
including the use of assistive
technology to support children on
the Autism spectrum.
Participants in this hands-on class
will try a variety of software
products and other tools designed to
provide accommodations and/or
adaptations that will enable
students to be more independent and
efficient. Boardmaker, The
Writer, Smart Boards, and Premier
Technology are some of the main
technologies that will be integrated
into this class. Teachers will
be able to "make and take" items to
use with their students as well as
design and/or remodel lesson plans
that incorporate assistive
technology.
