CULTURAL DIVERSITY IN LITERATURE
TODAY
INSTRUCTOR(S):
Elizabeth Couillard,
Wabeno School District
GRADE LEVEL:
7-Post Secondary
"The uniformity of earth's life,
more astonishing than its diversity,
is accountable by the high
probability that we derived,
originally, from some single cell,
fertilized by a bolt of lightning as
the earth cooled." Lewis
Thomas
From melting pot, to salad bowl, to
mosaic, America has long been
engaged in dialogue regarding the
issue of diversity. Today it
is not enough, though, that we teach
our students to value diversity.
Today we must find a way to help our
students celebrate each other's
differences while, at the same time,
recognize that we are all one
people. Participants will
research and review literature
worthy of integration, share
successful practices, and create
exciting learning units or learning
plans that go beyond past practice.
Participants will incorporate
factors such as teaching/learning
styles and social/emotional
intelligence into their projects.
