Our responsibilities as educators go beyond the state mandated standards of academia.  We are obligated to help shape our students to be conscientious global citizens. In this class we will create a service project together during the week from start to finish for a first-hand discovery of how accessible service learning is.  Together we will study issues of the world such as poverty, hunger, environment and discrimination through hands-on activities that you can take back to your classroom and slide right into your curriculum and align with your content standards.  Augment your current curriculum with thought provoking, emotion stirring and responsibility building activities.  You can rework the syllabus of an old class, start from scratch, or add significant meaning to the typical school food drive.

Be prepared to change how you think, teach, and live as you ignite your passion for change.

"Service-learning offers the opportunity for today's young people and tomorrow's leaders to learn, while addressing local needs. Hands-on experiences reinforce learning in the classroom, promoting civic responsibility and showing that citizens working together are a powerful source."

Objectives:

· Collect resources to teach global issues in your setting

· Gain a better awareness of local and global poverty issues.

· Discover ways that you and your students can get involved in a project.

· Understand the framework for service learning.

· Develop the skills necessary to design service-learning experiences that prepare pupils to be global citizens.

Wisconsin Teacher Standards Addressed: 1 and 10
