GGA10-03:
IMPROVING WRITING INSTRUCTION
INSTRUCTOR(S):
Sara Heisler,
sheisler@ashland.k12.wi.us
GRADE LEVEL: 1-12 Language Arts,
Special Education, & Core Subject
Teachers
(5-Day Workshop)
If your writing instruction is not
producing the results that match
state standards expectations, this
workshop offers solutions. Regular
and special education writing
teachers may choose to improve their
own classroom instruction, or focus
on a district-wide perspective to
improve their K-12 writing program.
Math, reading, science, and social
studies teachers will learn how to
incorporate their subject’s writing
standards so the focus remains on
teaching content, not teaching the
art of writing. Instruction can
also address WKCE exams, AP English
exams, ACT and SAT writing.
Participants work at their own paces
in their own areas of interest.
Teachers are encouraged to bring
their own instructional materials,
curriculums, and student samples.
Daily options include one-on-one
instruction, observing methods in
mock-classroom situations based on
participant needs, and sharing
information with other teachers.
Participants also have access to the
Internet, instructional videos, and
six hundred pages of bound
information about teaching thinking
and writing skills coordinated to
specific expectations and writing
samples for each grade level.
Participant Outcomes:
 |
Knowledge of how to
coordinate writing
expectations to state
standards |
 |
Knowledge of classroom
expectations and methods
which meet state writing
standards |
 |
Knowledge of rubrics and
assessment strategies that
improve writing and meet
state evaluation standards |
 |
Practical application to a
unit of instruction or
project that is useful to
each teacher |
