GGA10-15:  EXPLORING CAREER CLUSTERS & PATHWAYS - LINKING HIGH SCHOOL, POSTSECONDARY EDUCATION AND THE WORLD OF WORK

INSTRUCTOR(S): Fred Schlichting , fschlichting@solonk12.net
                           Andrea Schullo, andrea.schullo@witc.edu
                           Barb Landstrom, barb.landstrom@witc.edu

GRADE LEVEL: 9-12
(5-Day Workshop)

Career Clusters are groups of occupations that represent the world of work.  All fields of work are represented in the 16 career clusters.  Each cluster has a series of pathways or programs of study (a total of 81 pathways) that link high school coursework, postsecondary education, and the world of work.  We will explore the career clusters, pathways, labor market information, WITCs work in creating pathways for their students and then identify pathways that schools in Northwestern Wisconsin wish to offer students.   We will lay out templates (roadmaps) for students who wish to pursue a pathway/program of study.  Teachers will leave with specific templates that will guide instruction, guidance and counseling services, student career choices, links to postsecondary education and employment. This workshop will help school district career and technical education programs meet the requirements of the Carl Perkins Act grant program.

Participant Outcomes:

bullet

Develop an understanding of career clusters, pathways (program of study) and why they will be of value
for students.

bullet

See connections between high school and postsecondary curriculums.

bullet

Understand the importance of having career pathways/programs of study available for all students.

bullet

A template for a program of study to be implemented locally will be developed during the week.
