GGA11-10 Drug Impairment Training for Educational Professional (DITEP) (2 DAY WORKSHOP July 29th – July 30th

DITEP was developed by the International Association of Chief of Police and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.  The goal of the program is to enable educational professionals to identify chemically impaired students for the purpose of ensuring a safe learning environment.  In addition, participants will be better able to recognize different drugs and understand the physical signs and symptoms associated with each drug category. DITEP will not certify participants to be drug recognition experts, but it will help educators evaluate and document students suspected of drug use at school, and help them appropriately. Schools with educators who are trained in DITEP report a reduction in drug use at school.

Day One: Current drug trends

  Topics include:

· Alcohol physiology

· Drug categories & their observable effects

· Approaches for contacting the parent/guardian

*Day Two is additional training conducting a more in depth assessment of students identified as likely being under the influence of drugs and/or alcohol.  Topics include:

· The assessment process consisting of:

Horizontal Gaze Nystagmus

Divided attention sobriety tests  

Clinical signs and indicators

· The referral process

Policy development discussion
