GGA10-14:  B.O.W.L. - BRINGING OUR WORLD LIFE

INSTRUCTOR(S): Peg Medcraft , medcraftp@osceola.k12.wi.us
                           Beth Izdepski, izdepskib@osceola.k12.wi.us
GRADE LEVEL: K-12
(5-Day Workshop)

The B.O.W.L presentation will include hands-on activities and a multi-media presentation, focusing on these objectives: Motivating learners through citizenship and service, developing an understanding of how a service project can benefit all students, incorporating global education into curriculum, and working collaboratively with others for a common goal.  The instructional philosophy behind the B.O.W.L. project uses the research around engagement in learning to support increased student achievement for all.  Students who have had a history of being lesser engaged in traditional teaching methods have found success through active participation in higher level, critical thinking skills.  The collaboration has bridged the application of core academic standards using a 21st century theme.  This project demands student input, decision-making, and reflection.

The participant outcomes are: Collecting resources to teach global issues in your setting, gaining a better awareness of local and global poverty and political issues, gaining knowledge about student engagement and its effect of student learning, and brainstorming means to bring a B.O.W.L. project to your community.  Participants will walk away from the session passionate to join the fight to end hunger and eager to incorporate global citizenship into their curriculum, in their school, and their district.
