SS1:  LEGENDS, LORE & LIVELIHOOD OF WISCONSIN NATIVE PEOPLES

INSTRUCTOR(S): Carol Knudson, Kenosha Unified School District
GRADE LEVEL: K-4

This course will help to develop a historical perspective of Wisconsin tribes and tribal sovereignty.  Students will become familiar with the characteristics, beliefs, legends and sacred sites of the Wisconsin tribes.  We will investigate ways to incorporate diversity into curriculum studies by focusing on Native People of Wisconsin and develop an ability to evaluate reading material and other resources that pertain to Native Americans for accuracy and to limit biased view and stereotypes.  Participants will explore web sites, literature, magazines and newspapers to showcase a specific tribe or band and to prepare a unit to incorporate into their classroom curriculum.  This course is designed to prepare thoughtful, knowledgeable, and effective educators for a diverse society.
